Signs Your Tucson Home’s Ducts Need Cleaning

Duct cleaning is one of those services people get talked into. So here is the honest list: the signs that mean your ducts actually need it, the signs that point somewhere else, and the cases where you can skip it. Written for Tucson homes, because the dust, the coolers and the old slab ducts here change the answers.

Signs that point to the ducts

1. Dust puffs from a register when the system starts

The clearest sign there is. The blower pushes a burst of air through the duct, and whatever is loose inside comes out first. If you see it, the ducts are holding dust.

2. A film of dust comes back on furniture a day or two after you clean

Every house gets dusty. A house that gets dusty in 24 hours, and more so near the registers, is being dusted by its own ducts.

3. One room is dustier than the rest

Often that room has the return, or a supply run with a gap in it that pulls attic dust. Worth mentioning when you call, because it can point to a leak as well as dirt.

4. A musty smell when the AC or cooler starts, strongest in the first minutes

In Tucson this is usually a swamp cooler story: damp dust in the ducts or the plenum. In an AC-only home it can be the coil or the drain pan. Either way the smell is coming from inside the system.

5. You can see it

Pull a register and shine a flashlight into the first foot of duct. Coated, fuzzy, or dark spots means it is time. Clean metal means it is not.

6. Droppings, nests or insects

Attic ducts and under-slab ducts both get visitors. If you have found droppings near a register or heard scratching in the ducts, they need cleaning and the entry point needs sealing.

7. You just moved in

You do not know when the ducts were last done, if ever. A look at the registers tells you a lot. Most people who move into an older Tucson home do one cleaning early and then go years.

8. You just remodeled, or had new floors or drywall

Construction dust is fine, heavy and goes everywhere. The system pulls it in and spreads it. A cleaning after the dust settles is the normal move, and new-build homes often need the same thing in their first year.

9. A dust storm got inside

If the registers are coated after a monsoon storm, the ducts are too. See monsoon dust and your air ducts.

10. A swamp cooler has been running for several seasons

Cooler ducts collect damp dust and typically need cleaning every 2 to 3 years, not 3 to 5. If yours has never been done, it is due.

Signs that point somewhere else

  • Weak airflow with a new filter is more often a dirty blower or coil, a crushed flex duct, or a closed damper than dirty ducts. See AC coil and HVAC cleaning.
  • Water near the air handler is a drain line, not a duct.
  • Higher bills with no other change can be a dirty coil, low refrigerant or a leaking duct. Cleaning helps the first one only.
  • Allergy symptoms have many causes. The EPA says duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems, and anyone who promises it will is overselling.

When you can skip it

If your registers are clean inside, the house does not get dusty fast, there is no smell, and nobody has remodeled or moved in, your ducts are probably fine. Change the filter and check again next year. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association suggests every 3 to 5 years for a typical home, and some homes go longer.

If you call us and describe a clean system, we will tell you to keep your money. That is not a sales line. Clean ducts are a two-hour job we would rather not charge you for.

The Tucson factors

Three things make Tucson different. Desert dust is fine enough to get past a standard filter. Swamp coolers turn dry dust into damp dust that sticks and smells. And older adobe and block homes have metal ducts in the slab that collect debris for decades and can hold water after a storm. If your home has any of those, check the registers more often.
