Swamp Cooler Duct Cleaning in Tucson, AZ

An evaporative cooler pushes cool, damp air through your ducts all summer. Damp air and desert dust together leave a film inside the ducts that dries out, smells musty every spring, and blows back into the house. We clean the ducts, the plenum and the registers on the cooler side of your system.

What’s included

What swamp cooler duct cleaning includes

A swamp cooler, or evaporative cooler, cools air by pulling it through wet pads and blowing it into the house. That air carries moisture. In a dry climate that is the whole point, but inside a duct it means dust sticks instead of blowing through.

What we clean on a standard job:

  • The cooler ductsEvery duct served by the cooler, from the plenum under the cooler to each register. Cleaned under negative pressure with brushes and air tools, the same way as air duct cleaning.
  • The plenum and dropThe box and the short vertical duct under a roof-mounted cooler. This is where the most buildup sits, because it is closest to the wet pads.
  • Registers and grillesRemoved, cleaned and put back. Mineral scale and damp dust on a register are the first thing you see.
  • The damperOn homes that switch between cooler and AC, we check the damper between the two systems, clean around it, and tell you if it is not sealing.
  • A look at the coolerWe typically check the pads, the pan and the water line for the usual causes of a musty smell and tell you what we find. Ask us how far that check goes when you book.

Not part of this service: pad replacement, pump or float repairs, and winterizing the cooler. Those are cooler service jobs. If your cooler needs them, we tell you.

How it works

How a cooler duct cleaning goes

Three steps, and you know the price before any work starts.

  1. Call or send the formTell us whether you run a cooler only, or a cooler and an AC on the same ducts, and whether the cooler is on the roof or a side wall. You get a quote before anyone comes out.
  2. Inspect and cleanThe tech checks the plenum, the damper and each register, then cleans the cooler ducts under negative pressure with brushes and air tools. Registers come off and get cleaned.
  3. Walk-throughEverything goes back on and you typically see the result before the tech leaves. If the pads or the pan look like the real source of the smell, we tell you.

Why Tucson is different

Why cooler ducts in Tucson need their own cleaning

  • Dust plus moistureDry desert dust blows through a duct. Damp dust sticks to it. A cooler turns the first kind into the second every day it runs.
  • Hard water scaleTucson water is hard. As cooler water evaporates it leaves mineral scale on the pads, the pan and the first few feet of duct. That scale holds dust and smells.
  • The spring start-up smellThe cooler sits unused all winter with whatever was left in the ducts. The first warm week of April, it starts up and the house smells musty. That smell is the buildup in the ducts and the plenum, not the fresh pads.
  • Dual systemsA lot of Tucson homes run a cooler in April, May and June, switch to AC for monsoon season when the humidity makes the cooler useless, and go back to the cooler in September. Both systems may share ducts. A damper that does not seal lets damp cooler air into the AC side, and that side was never built for moisture.
  • Older homes and ducts in the slabMany older Tucson houses with coolers have metal ducts that run under the floor. Moisture from the cooler settles at the low points. These runs typically need the right tools and more time. Ask us about under-slab ducts when you call.

Check your home

Signs your cooler ducts need cleaning

  • A musty or wet-dog smell when the cooler starts, especially in spring
  • Damp dust or a gray film on the registers
  • White mineral crust on the registers nearest the cooler
  • Dust blowing out of the vents when the cooler runs
  • The smell comes back a few days after you changed the pads
  • You can see dark spots or growth just inside a register
  • You just bought a home with a cooler and do not know when the ducts were cleaned

If you changed the pads, cleaned the pan and the smell is gone, your ducts may be fine. If the smell comes back, the ducts are the next place to look.

How often and how much

How often should cooler ducts be cleaned?

More often than ducts on an AC-only home. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association suggests every 3 to 5 years for a typical home, and a cooler is one of the things that moves that sooner. Many Tucson cooler owners typically have the ducts done every 2 to 3 years, timed for spring before the first start-up. Ask us what makes sense for your setup.

What cooler duct cleaning costs in Tucson

The price depends on how many registers the cooler serves, whether it is a cooler-only or a dual system, where the cooler is mounted, and whether any ducts run under the slab. Call or send the form and we will give you a quote before anyone comes out. More on the duct cleaning cost page.

FAQ

Swamp cooler duct questions

Short, honest answers before you book.

Ask us a question

What is the best time of year to clean cooler ducts?

Spring, before the first start-up, so the first cool air of the season is clean. Fall works too, right after you shut the cooler down, so nothing sits in the ducts all winter.

Will cleaning the ducts get rid of the musty smell?

If the smell is coming from buildup in the ducts and the plenum, yes. If it is coming from old pads, a dirty pan or standing water in the cooler, cleaning the ducts alone will not fix it. We check both and tell you which it is.

I have a cooler and an AC on the same ducts. Does that change anything?

Yes. The shared ducts get both damp cooler air and dry AC air, and the damper between the two systems matters. We clean the shared runs and check that the damper seals. If it does not, we tell you.

Do you replace cooler pads or fix the pump?

No. That is cooler service, not duct cleaning. We will tell you if the pads or the pump look like the problem.

Can mold grow in cooler ducts?

Damp dust in a duct can support growth, which is why cooler ducts get a musty smell more often than AC ducts. If we see visible growth, we tell you and can quote mold and duct sanitizing as a separate step. We do not promise that cleaning prevents health problems. The EPA says duct cleaning has not been shown to do that.

How long does it take?

Most cooler-only homes typically take 2 to 3 hours. Dual systems and under-slab ducts take longer. Ask us and you get a time estimate with the quote.

Do you work on coolers mounted on the side of the house?

Yes. Side-mount and window coolers have a shorter duct run, which usually means a quicker job.
